Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Susan G. Komen for the cure was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker from a promise made to her sister Susan Goodman Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, Komen for the Cure is an international organization with a network of over 100,000 survivors and activists. Working through 125 local Affiliates and more than 100 Race for the Cure events, Komens promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

The Phoenix Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Komen Phoenix Affiliate was started by three members of the Junior League of Phoenix (JLP) to honor their friend who lost her life to breast cancer. In 1993, the JLP and Banner Health partnered to bring the Race for the Cure to Phoenix. That first race drew 1,500 participants and raised $65,000. In 2008, we celebrated the 16th anniversary of the Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure with over 31,500 participants and raised a record $2 million.

Susan G. Komen and Clean Air Cab

Clean Air Cab, Arizonas first completely carbon neutral taxicab service, has released their first pink Komen for the Cure cab on the streets of Metropolitan Phoenix. Clean Air Cab will be donating one dollar of every fare to Susan G. Komen for the Cure over the next year.

For Steve Lopez, founder of Clean Air Cab, choosing to support Komen was simple. His mother and grandmother are both survivors of breast cancer. He stated, "Breast cancer awareness is a very important cause, and one that I am proud to support. Educating women about early detection is just so critical and I want to help. I didn't want to just do a token effort, so Clean Air Cab is supporting Komen for the Cure every day, 365 days a year. I care."

About Clean Air Cab

Based out of Mesa, Ariz., Clean Air Cab is Arizona's first carbon neutral taxicab service. Its mission is to make it affordable and convenient for everyone to go green by offering green cabs at less expensive rates than traditional cab alternatives. The eco-friendly transportation company is launching in October 2009 with a fleet of 26 Toyota Prius, currently the most fuel-efficient hybrid auto on the market. The Ford Crown Victoria's traditionally used by cab companies releases approximately 160% more emissions than the Toyota Prius. The Toyota Prius also offers an extra 33 miles per gallon of gas - a gas savings of almost 1,000 miles per gallon across the fleet. In addition to the substantial reduction of carbon emissions and improved mileage offered by its fleet, Clean Air Cabpurchases carbon offsets and supports global reforestation by subsidizing the planting of 10 rain forest trees monthly for each cab in service.
