So, What Exactly is a Carbon Offset Anyway?

December 21, 2009

A carbon offset represents a reduction in emissions somewhere else – like a renewable energy or a reforestation project – to balance out the emissions that you cannot reduce. Also, carbon offsets are the only way to get your carbon footprint to zero today.

Unlike other pollutants, carbon dioxide does not affect the local area where it was emitted. Rather, CO2 impacts the entire earth. Carbon dioxide emitted in the U.S. will impact China as much as it does the U.S. Therefore, a reduction in China will have the same benefit as reducing a ton here in the U.S. This rule is the same regardless of what type of credit you purchase, be it towards wind, solar or energy efficiency.

At Clean Air Cab, we chose to purchase our carbon credits from a project supporting energy efficiency. It is called the Truck Stop Electrification project and it is reducing tailpipe emissions from freight trucks that transport our consumer goods across the country. This project has offset over 112,000 metric tons over the time period of 2003 to 2007.

The largest source of CO2 emissions globally is the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas in power plants, industrial facilities and automobiles. According to the EPA, the transportation sector alone is the second largest source of CO2 emissions here in the U.S. after electricity.

We are all responsible for climate change and we must all be a part of the solution. Waiting for legislation to impose cap and trade regulations is simply something we cannot afford to do as citizens and stewards of this planet. However, according to The Carbon Neutral Company, the world’s legislators are required to deliver an 80% reduction in emissions over the next 30-50 years. They predict legislative pressure on companies is likely to get tighter due to this requirement.

Say what you will about the debates on this topic, but there is definite verifiable goodness in doing it. The bottom line is that if it betters the environment – even a little bit – we feel we should participate and help our guests live an eco-friendly lifestyle while riding in our cabs. We also know that adding cars to the market contributes to increased pollution without a decrease by one of our competitors. Choosing not to offset our emissions with this knowledge would not be a good eco conscious decision.

We also need to consider that society is changing in the sense that environmental and climate issues are being taken far more seriously. The Financial Times recently said that organizations aware of carbon prices and their impact on operations will be steps ahead of their competition. Becoming energy smart is smart for your business. Many businesses are placing an increasing emphasis on the environmental credentials of their supply chain, which means becoming carbon neutral can help your company win new business. Going carbon neutral can also help your business drive revenue as Customers are increasingly taking an interest in how companies conduct their business in relation to climate change.

For all of these reasons and more, Clean Air Cab decided to purchase carbon credits as one of our sustainable business practices. We also composed our fleet completely of hybrid vehicles which emit 62% less emissions than a traditional taxicab. This means there is less carbon for us to offset. I would also like to share with you some tips on how you can reduce the carbon footprint of your personal car:

Keep your car tuned up and running efficiently.
Replace your air, oil and fuel filters according to schedule.
Keep your tires properly inflated (this alone can prevent 400-700 pounds of CO2 a year!)
Studies have shown up to 30% of the difference in mpg is due to driving habits. By following these simple steps, you can reduce your carbon footprint by 1 metric ton:

• Accelerating slowly and smoothly
• Driving the speed limit
• Maintaining a steady speed
• And anticipating your stops and starts

Also, if your household has two cars, make sure the car used for commuting is the most fuel efficient.

In conclusion, carbon offsets can help your business by:

• Staying ahead of Legislative Regulations
• Setting yourself apart from your competition
• Winning new business from other green minded companies
• Gaining new customers who are environmentally conscious

Before you purchase carbon credits to offset your emissions, I would like to remind to always start with the 3 R’s, reduce reuse and recycle. In the words of our business partner Carbon Fund, “Reduce what you can. Offset what you can’t.” That is their motto and we are happy to support it.
